Hi all,
Thanks for a great April meeting of the Syracuse Urbanism Collective!
At this month’s meeting, we met at Pose Photo Studio, with a guest presentation and crowdsourced mapping exercise from Liza Bernard of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, looking at potential locations for bike racks in Downtown Syracuse. We’ll continue to rotate meeting locations between different venues in various city neighborhoods.
We discussed various project team updates. Some of these are listed below:
- Onondaga Creekwalk Wayfinding – Please sign up as a volunteer to implement the project here: https://syracuseurbanism.org/onondaga-creekwalk-wayfinding/
- Mini Meadows: If you want to help with regular maintenance over the next few months at Loguen Park, please join the Mini Meadows WhatsApp group or contact Kevin at contact@syracuseUrbanism.org. Write Mini Meadows in the subject line.
- I-81 Viaduct Project Recommendations: We met with NYSDOT and city officials recently. They’ve implemented some of our recommendations (such as wide bridge spans to accommodate wide sidewalks below). They’re studying and designing a number of our other recommendations as well, such as a West Street crosswalk from Park Ave to the Onondaga Creekwalk’s proposed extension, additional bike/ped crossings at Almond Street, a reimagined Almond/Genesee intersection with an enhanced Forman Park, landscapes and plantings with a vibrant appearance in a variety of seasons, safe cycling infrastructure, safe traffic signaling, urban context-appropriate street lighting, and more. We’ll keep you updated as we continue to work with NYSDOT, the City of Syracuse, and others.
- Urbanist Book Club: We’re voting on our second book now. Don’t forget to vote in our WhatsApp group! The choices are: Building and Dwelling by Richard Sennet, Mutual Aid by Dean Spade, and Happy City by Charles Montgomery.
- Public Policy: We’re working on next steps for getting our policy memos into the right hands. Answer this meeting poll to help us schedule our next team meeting: https://strawpoll.com/e2naXPRA0yB
- Regional Planning: We’ve shifted our approach from creating dense policy documents to creating an interactive, approachable set of infographics. More details and info on our next meeting will be available soon, so stay tuned!
We also had an update during open discussion from the Creekrats. The Onondaga Creek Art Float will be Sat, June 7th @ Noon, at Armory & Franklin Squares. Artist registration opens May 1st. Art will float from Dickerson Street to Plum Street! Learn more here: https://creekrats.org/about/onondaga-creek-art-float/
