August 2026 Meeting Follow-Up & Newsletter

Hello everyone!

Thank you for a great August meeting of the Syracuse Urbanism Collective last Tuesday!

At this meeting:

  • We introduced the new board members! This was the first meeting to feature Javier Zavaleta as President, Shail Patel as Vice President, Dylan Buck as Treasurer, and my (Baxter Hankin) shift to my new role as Director of Policy and Design. Becca Saya continues to serve as Media Outreach Specialist.
  • The design team presented our ideas for activating the space in front of City Hall, bounded by East Washington, Montgomery, and Market Street. This proposal included a cafe kiosk, seating with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs, and an informational sign board.
  • The membership split into breakout groups and brainstormed their own contributions and edits to the design team’s plan.
  • The public policy team recently published a few more memos and is transitioning into focusing mainly on advocacy work, so if you’re interested in participating, please reach out!

We announced upcoming activities SUC has listed for September on the calendar on our website, including:

  • The county legislature’s housing & transportation advisory board Open House on Tuesday, September 29 at 5:30pm at the Inspyre Innovation Hub’s 2nd floor

  • Art on the Porches, Saturday September 12 from 11-5 on Ruskin Ave

Keep an eye out for more announcements regarding these events! We also discussed opportunities for fun events to be shared with the SUC Social WhatsApp group, so keep an eye out for those as well.
